WCBN-FM’s 50th Birthday! – No Boring Things 1/29/2022

Unfortunately, due to a scheduling oopsies, it turns out there wasn’t time for two hours of No Boring Things. I’m frequently on Send in the Clowns, the student rotational show Wednesdays from 7 to 8 PM, so tune in then for more me!

Lots of music from ’72

On January 23, 1972, WCBN-FM went on the air for the first time! Before that, WCBN existed in other forms, but this was when the WCBN-FM we know and love today came to be! Celebrating this, I focused on music released in 1972, with a couple of exceptions. Thanks to those who called in requests, it’s always great to hear from you! Keep your eyes and ears peeled for the WCBN fundraiser, coming soon to wherever you get your freeform radio!

In the Studio! – No Boring Things 1/22/2022

Woohoo! Mission accomplished for No Boring Things. A wildly successful first show in the studio in my personal opinion. I spent the first hour jamming out, and the second hour listening to some stuff I hadn’t heard before and doing a bit of chatting. Thanks to everyone who called in, hope to see you next week!

This week’s playlist, minus a couple of apparently obscure tracks.

I couldn’t find a couple of the songs I played on Spotify. That’s why you should stay tuned to WCBN Radio Free Ann Arbor, you truly won’t hear it anywhere else! Here they are:

Virginia by The Sights

I couldn’t find anything about Eat, Eat, Eat anywhere, so I guess I’ll have to go back and check that I got the band and song name right. For the full list of songs, including those not on Spotify, check out the playlist on the WCBN website.

I also mentioned a YouTube video about the editing of Strawberry Fields Forever. Here it is:

Back At It – The Spirit of Radio 1/7/2022

I got the opportunity to sub for an in-person show last night. It felt great to be back in the studio! After a couple weeks’ hiatus this was the perfect way to start off the new year. Thanks to everyone who sent in requests! The new WCBN schedule comes out January 16th, and until then I’m crossing my fingers, praying for, and manifesting an in-person slot for No Boring Things this year. May 2022 be at least marginally better than this year!

Something a Bit Different – No Boring Things 12/28/2021

Unfortunately, I’m not able to run my show this week. The one and only Grapefruit Jones will be taking over my time this week, thanks to him for filling in! I should be back next week, and hopefully I’ll see you all then.

Home Again – No Boring Things 12/21/2021

I’m back home for the holidays! Today I had my brother act as guest DJ today. It was great to have him with me! He helped me pick some songs out. Finals are over which is fantastic news of course, but boy did they tire me out, so I didn’t pick music that was quite as energetic as last time. Thanks for tuning in! See you all next week.

Dump Songs! – No Boring Things 12/7/2021

They’re not songs that belong in the dump, they’re songs you listen to on your way to the dump. When I was little, my dad had a CD in his truck that he would put on when we took our garbage to the dump. For most of the show, I played my best memory of what was on that CD. The real thing has unfortunately been lost to the wheels of time, but I did my best. For the rest of the show, I went off the vibe of what was on that CD.

The playlist from this week’s show

My dad once said he knew I was growing up when having me help take trash to the dump sped up the process instead of slowing it down. Now I’m so grown up that I take my own trash out on occasion! How time flies…

On another note, I also got some equipment to connect my record player to my computer, so I can stream audio from records for these live remote shows. I gave it a whirl for this show, and it worked!

Genesis – No Boring Things 11/30/2021

Genesis visited Detroit last night, and I was fortunate enough to see them play. It was really exciting to see them still on the road! I’m still all worked up about it, so today’s episode was nothing but Genesis-mania.

This week’s playlist

Props to Phil Collins for going on tour at his age and in his condition. He wasn’t able to play the drums for this tour, and his son Nic Collins has taken over that role, which was pretty cool to see. Come back next week for a bit of a trip down nostalgia lane for me.

Visiting a Friend – Atlantic Cable 11/28/2021

I got the chance to play guest DJ on Lara’s show, Atlantic Cable, this Sunday. She played some songs, I played some songs, and I was tasked with “sneaking the word poutine into the broadcast.” Thanks for having me on Lara, it was a lot of fun hearing some new music!

Every song played on Atlantic Cable in the entire history of humankind

Check out the summary of the show here, and check out Lara’s profile on WCBN. Tune in Mondays from 1-2 PM if you like what you hear!

Live From Boston – 11/23/2021

I’m home for thanksgiving, but don’t think for a second that’s going to stop the music! We started things off today with a couple of listener requests: “Do It Again” by Steely Dan (I was asked to play something Steely Dan by “ur fav dj from england.” She’s on WCBN from 1 to 2 PM every Sunday, go check her show out!), and “Sometimes a Fantasy” by Billy Joel.

Some other personal highlights are a couple songs from Supertramp’s 1985 album Brother Where You Bound, and “The Weight” by The Band.

I have Brother Where You Bound in my record collection at home here in Boston, and that’s what got me into it. I love the whole album, so it’s definitely worth a listen if you like what you heard from it today.

As far as “The Weight” goes, I was inspired to put it on today after I watched The Last Waltz over the weekend. If you like The Band and/or concert films in general, it’s definitely worth a watch. They play a lot of their hits, plus a number of songs written by their star-studded cast of guests (among them is one of my favorite tracks from the movie, “Caravan” featuring Van Morrison).

Tune in again next week, and until then go blue!
